Each year, the North West CDC organizes enriching events to encourage spontaneous volunteerism amongst the students in schools, encouraging them to take small actions for the benefit of the less fortunate in the community. This year, the North West CDC partnered schools in educating students in resource conservation through the collection of used cooking oil. This campaign will be ongoing from January to March 2012. Through Grease-ycle in Aid @ North West, both NWCDC and partnering schools hope to raise 10,000 litres or one year supply of cooking oil worth $40,000 for our North West Food Aid Fund. West View Primary School takes pride to announce that we were a part of this project.
The Launch of this event was held in our school. Prior to the launch, many of our pupils, teachers, canteen vendors and eve parents, contributed to the collection of the used cooking oil. Our P5 pupils were invited to visit this historical moment in West View Primary School’s history. Our Guest of Honour for this Programme was Dr Vivian Balakrishnan Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Adviser to Cashew Grassroots Organisations. Through Grease-ycle In Aid @ North West, the pupils were encouraged students to recycle used cooking oil into useful products such as biodiesel, which can then be used as a fuel for vehicles. During the launch, the pupils also learnt how used cooking oil can be recycled into soap.
Our pupils’ active participation in this project has engaged them in a purposeful way to help the society. We are very proud of all our pupils for the tremendous support they have given to this project. We also take this opportunity to thank our staff and parents for their support and cooperation.
