On 12th February 2010, our school was bustling with excitement as all staff and pupils celebrated Chinese New Year. It was also a day we commemorated Total Defence. The Total Defence committee this year calls Singaporean to action with its theme “I will”- a personal pledge to do something to defend what we hold dear. It ties in with our school value “Care” as we show care for our school with a fund raising project launched by our guests-of-honour, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan and grassroot leaders. We hope to raise $50,000 so that more pupils can benefit from the school programmes. Elderlys from Bright Hill Evergreen Home also joined in our celebration with a sing-a-long session and the West View “Madagascar” workout. It was a meaningful day as pupils learnt the significance of Total Defence and traditions of Chinese New Year with presentation and movie clips. Pupils folded ang bao fishes and together with Dr Vivian, completed a giant Chinese character “吉” which means auspicious. Overall it was a joyous and fun-filled occasion for everyone in West View.
